Problems of Multitasking While Studying

Many students, including me, get distracted by other things while studying. For

example, it became a habit of chatting on Facebook or

texting on cellphones while doing homework. This can give a bad impact on

students. There were experiments to prove this right. For a quarter of an hour,

the investigators from the lab of Larry Rosen, a psychology professor at

California State University–Dominguez Hills, marked down once a minute what

the students were doing as they studied. Although the students had been told at

the outset that they should “study something important, including homework,

an upcoming examination or project, or reading a book for a course,” it wasn’t

long before their attention drifted.(Slate) This experiment was like a 'New

Marshmallow Test', students are easily attracted to watching television or

texting while doing their work. Then why does this cause negative influences on

students?

David Meyer, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan who’s studied

the effects of divided attention on learning, takes a firm line on the brain’s

ability to multitask: “Under most conditions, the brain simply cannot do two

complex tasks at the same time. It can happen only when the two tasks are both

very simple and when they don’t compete with each other for the same mental

resources.(Slate) This means that when students multitask while doing their

work, the materials they learn aren't fully in their memory than when they

concentrate.

Also, multitasking effects grades. Researchers are beginning to demonstrate

that media multitasking while learning is negatively associated with students’

grades. In Rosen’s study, students who used Facebook during the 15-minute

observation period had lower grade-point averages than those who didn’t go on

the site.(Slate)

Banning multitasking for good would be hard to achieve. However, if other

people like, teacher or parents tell them that they should concentrate on their

work, the problem would be able to decrease.

Self Reflection- Presentation

I presented about 'How to Use the Internet Responsibly". I did it in the google presentation, there were benefits about it, like, it saved the information right away. However, it depends on the internet so if it's too slow, the slide doesn't go well. It happened to me, so it I thought I should use powerpoint next time. Also, I think I should make more eye contact and be more enthusiastic. Additionally, I would like to be more prepared next time.

Research - Information Seeking Strategies

1.What are some of your sources that you are using to find information about your topic?  List them here.  Please find a new article from your list of sites and highlight it and save it to Diigo and TAG it.  Please open up your app Feedly to see if there are any sites related to it.
-Google search, Feedly, and Google alert

2. A note on large search engines (Google, Bing, and Yahoo)

According to Easybib, what might be some benefits with using large search engines like Google,Bing, and Yahoo?
-It's fast and privides you with a lot of information.
3.  How does Google Help you Find what you are looking for?  Click here
-They maintains an index of billions of pages of contents. There are four steps: search the index, analyze the web pages for relevance, evaluate the site's reputation and rank the web pages.
4. What are the problems with using Google, Bing, and Yahoo?
1.Many of Google’s search results are biased and non-academic.
2.Google’s search results are tailored to you.
3.Google’s results are focused on information available on the internet space that is easily accessed.

5. What would be a more reliable and credible site to use than Google?  Hint:  You have already created some accounts.
-Jstor and Feedly
6. Please provide 2 benefits of using Wikipedia and 2 reasons why you should not use Wikipedia.  Please cite your sources here using MLA format.
-Why you should not:
1.You especially can’t rely on something when you don’t even know who wrote it.
2.There is little diversity among editors.

-Why you should:
1. Easy to keep track of what's going on by watching the "recent changes"2.Wikis are social software in that they help connect people across an organisation.  A wiki can help your staff get to know each other.

7. Continue in Easybib to B. Off-The-Wall Sources
Why might interviewing a source be a good idea?  Who would you interview for your topic?  How would you go about setting up a meeting.  (Would you call, email, etc?)  Please list someone you could interview and write down the process you do here.
You can get answers to your questions directly, as opposed to finding the answers manually by researching. Interviewing someone also has the advantage of hearing current information directly from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

The president of the Nike company.
People who oppose Nike

8.  Please clichere and play the game.  List the main idea(s) and what you learned before moving on the the next question.

-You shouldn't rely too much on information from the internet, but should work on it independently.
-Critically evaluate the information you need.
-Some information aren't reliable because they might be over date or someone who isn't professional wrote it.

9. C. Evaluating Sources for Credibility

When evaluating any source what questions should you ask?
Please click on at least 2 of the following links below and list how you will know whether or not a site is reliable?

    10. Please go back to the article you selected and list the evidence for why you believe this site is reliable or not.  List at least 8 reasons for your answer.
I thinks that is it reliable because:
    1. Global distribution of million subscribers
    2. Recently made(2013)
    3. Article posted within 5 years
    4. There is a email where you can contact the representative
    5. There is a sign of 'All Rights Reserved' at the bottom
    6. Clear about the publisher on ' About us'
    7. Articles are reviewed by experienced editors
    8. Latest edits are made right away
    11.  Please go to this site:  http://www.martinlutherking.org/ and provide information on whether or not this site is credible or not.  List specific reasons why you believe this and be ready to explain your answer next class.
I think this site isn't credible because there isn't a copyright sign at the bottom and the magazine was from 1998, which I think it is a little over date.

    Name of Company Research

I chose the Nike for the company that I will be researching on. I thought that it would be great if ISD would hold hands with Nike, because Nike is well known for its high quality and ISD would need good sports equipment.

Three things about Nike researched in class

    1. Nike helped donating by holding events or directly giving money to people in need.
    2. Gave opportunities to teenagers around the world, so they can be grown to a soccer player.
    3. Opened 2013 KBL & Nike Youth Basketball to help teens play basketball.

Be yourself because everybody else is taken

From the presentation, I learned that being yourself is important and there are a lot of ways to have confidence in myself. It made me look back and think about how I was before.
I also learned from other presenters about the MLA format and citing sources. Also I liked the story in a single picture.
